4 presentations not to be missed at the ASSA 2021 Convention

With a short time to go until the Actuarial Society of South Africa’s annual convention, MBE Client Service Director Pamela Hellig puts a spotlight on the presentations she’s looking forward to attending.

The ASSA 2021 Virtual Convention (19-22 October) is the highlight of the South African actuarial calendar and although I’m sure I’m not the only one who is counting the days until we can all meet at the convention again in person, the 2021 programme is packed with exciting and thought-provoking topics to enjoy from the comfort of our own homes.

These are some of the ASSA 2021 Convention presentations I’m especially looking forward to:

I’ve been involved in several projects relating to reinsurance under IFRS 17, ranging from methodology to implementation, and I know it’s still an area of concern for many insurers.  In this presentation, I hope to hear about ways in which our clients may be able to leverage their reinsurance arrangements and reinsurer relationships to their advantage.

Actuarial Transformation

Local and global events in recent years (if not always!) have shown us that human beings are not rational and we do not always make rational decisions.  As a member of a profession that values statistics, data and rational decision-making, I strive to overcome my cognitive biases.  Being aware of them is probably the best place to start, so I look forward to learning from Dominic Gaobepe’s presentation REFRAMING UNCONSCIOUS BIAS: UNDERSTANDING BIAS IN DECISION MAKING.

Unfortunately, Covid-19 haunts this year’s convention, as it did last year, but while 2020 was largely about theory and projections, in 2021 we have some experience to share and learn from.  Given their position on the frontline of South Africa’s Covid-19 vaccination drive, when Discovery talks about the impact of the virus, I listen.  I’ll therefore be tuning into DISCOVERY HEALTH’S COVID-19 EXPERIENCE by Chanie Suttner, Shirley Collie, Michael Cohen, Tommy Chen, Jared Champion, Sameera Haneef, Roseanne Harris and Matt Zylstra.

Innovation in the Insurance Sector

To point out the silver lining in the pandemic cloud, Covid-19 has catapulted us forward technologically and innovation-wise at a speed, few could have imagined. Given Colin Dutkiewicz’s illustrious involvement in the profession throughout his career, and most recently as one of the leaders of the IFoA’s Covid-19 Action Taskforce (ICAT), his presentation on ACTUARIAL INNOVATION IN THE COVID-19 ERA is one not to miss.

Drop by the MBE stand to chat through any actuarial challenges you are facing at the moment with one of our consultants. And when you drop by our stand you can to enter our free prize draw. We look forward to seeing you there.
