Meet Kyaw Soe Thein our latest team member

Kyaw Soe recently joined our MBE Consulting South Africa team so we took the opportunity to ask him a few questions about himself.

What inspired you to become an Actuary?

To be honest, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do after high school. It was during registration week at university that I stumbled upon Actuarial Science and Statistics. I had a very interesting conversation with a lecturer who summarised Actuarial Science and Statistics as a way to understand the nature of things through the analysis of data and the application of problem-solving skills.

Sure, Actuarial Science may be heavily focused on finance and insurance, but the profession is constantly evolving. There’s never a dull moment when the skills you learn can be applied across a wide variety of disciplines. It encourages one to constantly learn and improve oneself.

What is the biggest misconception about being an actuary?

Actuaries are risk-averse; I think I know more risk-seeking actuaries than not.

What’s one thing that surprised you about working at MBE Consulting?

The culture, it’s like working with family and friends, perhaps without all the pitfalls because there is still a large presence of professionalism.

What energises you at work?

Trying to find a solution to a complex problem; the fun is in the process of discovery and not just the final answer.

How do you like to start your day?

Coffee, gym, coffee and catching up on the news with breakfast…and coffee.

Do you have a hidden talent? What is it?

How would one know if one had a hidden talent because it’s hidden? This is going to keep me up at night.

What’s something you’ve done, but will never do again?

Gorge swinging – I have a fear of heights but decided to try it anyway… a big mistake.

What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?

I have always find the term “weird food” to be relative, but if I was to choose, I would have to say jellyfish salad and it was very delicious.

Where is your favourite place and why?

Wherever I am with my significant other and my two doggy children. Home is where the heart is.

What three words would your friends use to describe you?

Steadfast, thoughtful and passionate.
